The Holy Roman empire was founded by Charlemagne in 800 A.D. Charlemagne was chosen by Pope Leo III to be the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, this was the birth of the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire was potentailly Europe's greatest state, but the heart of the Holy Roman Empire had been in Germany.
By 1600 the Holy Roman Empire was merely a shadow of its former glory. After Charlemagne"s son died his grandsons divided up the kingdom into three parts and each grandson ruled one part.
